In the text 'The Village By the Sea' written by Anita Desai there is an important relationship which is created by Mr Panwallah who acts apon Hari as a farther figure towards him, as he lacks care and guidence from his absent farther. And Hari in return trusts Mr Panwallah's kindness as Hari's life is slowly changing in a foreign, frightening environment.
Hari a young boy who is introduced to a whole new lifestyle in Bombay and Mr Panwallah who see's potential in Hari as they both seem to connect and show trust towards eachother. '"I wont" Hari promised "I want to learn more". "good!" cried Mr Panwallah'. This showed how interested Hari was to learn more from this man who provided skills with purposes. "Thats what i want you to say. Learn learn learn - so that you can grow and change". This shows how Mr Panwallah understands Hari's needs. Mr Panwallah's interest in Hari starts from when we fist meet Mr Panwallah. When we first meet Mr Panwallah he 'smiles' at Hari and Hari 'smiles' back. Later in the text he starts to ask Hari about his past, his home in thul, asking" 'where do you come from?, the same village as Jagu?' ".and because of this developing interest he recognizes Hari's qualities then decides to bring him on as his apprentice.
Hari is taken into care with Mr Panwallah as his apprentice, which gives Hari a sense of being safe and welcome. And that he is learning and gaining skills that people will pay him to use. "Then you can go back and set up as the village watch mender" this means an idea of hope. Hari is given a "man whom he can trust", which is even more important seeing as he is in Bombay. In return Mr Panwallah is given an apprentice whom he can trust, who is so innocent that he will not take advantage of his kindness.
