What are Hari's motivations for leaving his family?

In the story 'The Village By The Sea' the author Anita Desai shows the character of Hari throughout the text to have the determination to leave his family behind and move to Mumbai. Often throughout the story the author gives hints on particual reasons why he wants to leave. He is sick of his father which has no contribution to the family what so ever and also he wants to support his sisters and his sick mother. His motivations of leaving Thul and moving to Mumbai is beacause he will be open to more options for jobs, social life and carrers. Hari wants to be able to support his sisters financially is described in the book "he would have to find them husbands, and buy them their wedding finery, silk saris and gold jewelry".

In what ways does Anita Desai use the character of Hari to explore the experiences of indians living in a present-day india?

In modern day India...
The life in modern day India the people that live in the small towns and villages are decribed to have high expectations of the bigger cities. When he arrives in Mumbai he doesn't know much about his surroundings and realises how different the big town is compared to his life at home.
